Back In The Saddle Again [Nov. 6th, 2009|09:18 pm]

[music |Keane]

I decided that I'm ready to dive back into Bethany's Designs again and it's been quite serendipitous really because I've had quite a few orders on Etsy lately, I was asked to consign with another store and just last night I was invited to be a vendor at a jewelry show.  The only problem with that is that it's 9 days away and I hardly have anything in stock so that pretty much means I'm going to be busting tail to get things prepared from now until then.
At first I thought there were 70 vendors but after getting the vendor agreement I realized there's 70 tables and only 25-30 vendors.  Durrrr. A much smaller scale than a DIY Trunk Show or Renegade Fair but hey, I'm flattered to have been asked and it's good timing right now for me.
Thankfully with it being a local show, I'm going into this figuring that I'm not bringing 1/2 as much as I usually would.  In fact, tonight I finished my beaded jewelry.  I actually had a TON of it already made.  I don't know why I don't have any of it listed in my Etsy shop.  I really need to get on that.  It's a shame that it's all sitting in organizers.  I was so surprised when I pulled it all out tonight.  I mean, seriously, I probably have 50-100 pairs of earrings.  I've got *maybe* 20 bracelets.  I'm not bringing any beaded necklaces because honestly, I hate making them and the ones that are already made I'm not real happy with.  I do have necklaces that I'll be taking though.  They're just not strung ones.  Okay, that probably doesn't make much sense to any of you but it does to me.  lol.
Tonight I also started working on my fabric stuff.  I freaked out a bit though because I'm super low on buttons and ring bases.  I mean, seriously low.  I'm afraid that I'm not going to get them in time whn I order more tonight.  Eep.  Kind of puts me in a bind.  I'm also a bit concerned when it comes to my fabric jewelry just because I saw the vendor list for this show and it's ALL beaded jewelry.  There's no one else who sells stuff anything like what I make.  Even my beaded stuff.  There's is all very professional looking.  A lil' concerned about that but everyone has their niche and mine is my own.  The owners of this show obviously saw what I make and they said I was a "great fit" so I'm goin' in with that mindset.

I have to say, tonight made me realize how much I've missed creating.  I totally forgot how much I enjoy making jewelry.  I've been thinking of getting another tattoo lately and I can't decide if I want something related to life or to art.  Tonight makes my decision sway towards art.  I'm being vague here I know but I've got ideas in my head, promise.  ;)

Here's a few pictures from the past couple days...

Pushpins drying.  I had a ton of pushpin orders this week.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!  I love making these.  It's a great little diversion away from jewelry.  I like picturing how customers have them up on the bulletin boards or work cubicals.

Packaging.  I like to add little gifts to each order. :)

Ready to be turned into earrings.

Earrings drying.

In other news too, bethanysdesigns.com is down at the moment but it should be back up and running in a little while.  My etsy shop though is always running! :)

Oh yeah, and I'm completely out of business cards and jewelry cards too.  Fabulous!!!!!  lol  Another thing I need to get on PRONTO!

JOOI Club meeting [Nov. 6th, 2009|07:08 pm]

laurinab
The JOOI Club meeting went well today. The kids have planned several community service projects for November and December, as well as a Christmas social. Though I'd still like to see a few more members join, especially more girls or more older kids.

I had to go to Rite Aid today and thought I would walk out onto Washington Crossing Bridge so you could see where David Z and I were standing on Point Hill last week when I took those photos.

It's a beautiful day but geez it was cold out on the bridge with the wind blowing. When I got home I gathered up all the outside pots I had with dahlia bulbs in them and put them in the garage for the winter. Now nearly everything is winter-proofed except for the elephant ear bulb which still needs dug up. It sits up against the house and it hasn't frosted enough to kill the top yet.

Buying Stolen Goods [Nov. 6th, 2009|01:18 pm]
frugal_living

I love a good deal as much as anyone, but I won't buy shampoo, razor blades or any other health and beauty product from a flea market – even if they are practically giving the stuff away. Why? Because I spent enough years working retail to know that a good number of those items are stolen goods; and since there's no way to tell the stolen goods from the non-stolen goods, I simply choose not to buy any of it.

I apply the same rules when shopping on online auction sites. Sure, it would be nice to buy replacement heads for my toothbrush at a deep discount (those suckers are expensive); but I know that they're another commonly stolen item, so for me they're a no-go.

Where do you stand on buying second-hand goods? Are there items that you won't buy for fear that they've been stolen? Tell us where you stand on this issue.

To view a list of commonly stolen items, check out this list compiled by the National Retail Federation:

Friday again... [Nov. 6th, 2009|09:31 am]

Isn't it marvelous how light can transform! This stopped me in my tracks the other day and I had to go find my camera. My kitchen counter turned into art:)
Not much light today......rain turned snow, then sleet and now back to rain...
Sun is forecast for the weekend so this will all be gone again, and I can get those leaves raked up and tidied away for the winter. I tend to not bother raking until all the leaves are down, do it in one big sweep:)
Went to the symphony last night! What a treat:) Thanks Tammi.
Have a great weekend!

It's snowing! And it's gorgeous. Probably in 30 minutes I'll have some different feelings about it, maybe when I attempt climbing the giant hill on my street. I have this ominous sense that this will be the winter I start wiping out a lot.

In other news, did I mention that I was able to serve my landlord with the papers about the hearing on Halloween night, after five attempts? His wife answered the door and called to her son to get him. Her son shouted from a far-off distance: "Is it a girl?" Haaaaaa. Yes, it is the girl of your NIGHTMARES. Anyway, the hearing is on Monday, so we'll see if he actually shows up. I have no idea what actually has to happen to make money come out of his wallet and go into my wallet, but I really need it to happen, so cross your fingers for me. I went to my old apartment yesterday, talked to the residents and got confirmation that they moved in at the beginning of September, so I should be able to win this thing, I think.

In more other news, Bea Arthur and I are celebrating two happy years together. Here he is last night after getting trapped in a plastic bag and racing around blindly trying to get it off. Eventually he gave up trying to escape and just chilled out in the bag.

This is what I've been working on. It took a lot of trial-and-error and STILL it needs tweaking... but I like it. I tried to take pictures of it in situ today, in the woods... but it's the wrong season or wrong woods... so here it is, all nekkid in my light box :-)

ps: yeah, these aren't the best pics I've ever taken. WAY too dark.

daily walk [Nov. 5th, 2009|10:21 am]

laurinab
Up until the summer, I was doing great at taking daily walks. I really slowed down in the summer and only walked for Hälsostigen, orienteering or shopping in the city. I've been trying to get back to daily walks again, but I've been taking it slow with very short walks each time. This morning I set out to walk a short 15-minute walk. After about 1/4 of a mile, I felt the cruise control kick in and my body just followed the longer path that I have walked so many times. Before I knew it, I'd done the 45-minute longer loop, all on auto-pilot.
I feel great!

Third day in a row that I've had a migraine.  I'm at work even though I should be in bed.  I just don't want to go home.

Been a rough couple of days.
Feels kinda like I've taken one step forward and then two steps back.

Some good news though, I've gotten quite a few Etsy orders.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.  :)

That's all.

Denise from Maryland

Your Favorite Source for Bargains:

Goodwill Super Centers are a definite source for bargains for just about anything, but I use it mostly for my clothes. I have found top designer clothing there for a fraction of the price of buying it new. Most clothing is about $4.75 per item, and they offer half-price discounts on Midnight Madness days. I also love the print circulars that come in the mail - I save them; and use them along with glass cleaner to clean all the glass in my home. They work great - and they're free. ALDI'S is my go-to source for bargain groceries. I have been shopping there for years. They do not have a huge selection, but you cannot beat their prices. Right now I can buy four pounds of ground beef for UNDER $4.00 total! I also shop CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens for their clearance and sale items.
